Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber Security (IFSCS)

The Institute of Forensic Science and Cyber Security, the first of its kind in Bangladesh, is a constituent institute of the National University, Bangladesh. The goal of the Institute is to provide world-class forensic and cybersecurity education and training to law enforcing agencies in particular, the Bangladesh Police, corporate offices, banks and security organizations. Evidence suggests that the investigative use of forensic science is yet to be fully developed in Bangladesh. As a result, a high reliance on confessions and oral evidence in constructing cases for the prosecution resulted in poor conviction rates (roughly 20 -25 %) in Bangladesh still exists. This is largely because trained investigators and cultural orientations of the police. As a result, the domain of criminal investigation is still predominantly based on the culture of confession.

Research suggests that the application of forensic science research plays a significant role in the development of accurate, reliable, and cost-effective methods for the identification, analysis, and interpretation of physical evidence. At the same time, another goal of the IFSCS is to provide specialist education and training on cyber security and digital forensics which would enable to combat growing trends of cyber and financial crimes in Bangladesh.In other words, the vision of the Institute is to create skilled manpower to fulfill the acute shortage of forensics and cyber security experts in the country. The Institute’s goal is to make the criminal justice system of Bangladesh more effective through providing education, research, and professional training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students at the National University, as well as members of law enforcement agencies. Toward this goal, it will offer academic programs ranges from short courses to undergraduate and graduate levels relating to cyber security, digital forensics, and artificial intelligence. In sum, the IFSCS is a comprehensive teaching, training, and research entity in all areas of forensic science and cyber security. The Institute is committed to supporting law enforcement and criminal justice agencies to promote and contribute to safer communities and ensuring justice.
